Mercedes Schlapp has no easy task in her position in the role of White House adviser for strategic communication. It's not easy for Mercedes Schlapp to serve as the adviser to strategic communications at the White House. Schlapp has kept her focus throughout, by working in close collaboration with White House policy and political teams, as well as legislative affairs team and shops. To date, her focus has been issues such as school safety and the opioid crisis, infrastructure, trade along with other issues. Schlapp doesn't deal with reporters much in her current role. She gained attention in the wake of being announced as the candidate to succeed Hope Hicks, the communications director. Mercedes Schlapp isn't in a ideal position to be a White House strategist communications advisor. It is a job that can be challenging due to the fact she is working with the president who acts as his director of communications. Additionally, there are numerous legal cases which can disrupt the administration's strategy for communication, and a number of Cabinet secretaries are caught up with personal scandals. Schlapp is keeping her eyes on the goal, coordinating policies with White House staff from the Political and Legislative Affairs team and policy shop in addition to broader communication. The focus has been on matters such as school safety, opioids and infrastructure, and trade. As a director, she has not been in touch with many reporters. But, back in March, she was mentioned as a candidate who would replace Hope Hicks at the Communications Director position. The fight has been fierce. Schlapp has sided with Tony Sayegh who was also an aspirant. The two began fighting in the media. When the Washington Examiner published a negative report on Sayegh Schlapp stated that she called Sayegh to show a open heart.
